PM ridicules BJP’s ‘strong government’ claim

By IANS,

Pehowa (Haryana) : Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Monday ridiculed the claims of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) that only it can provide a strong government in Delhi.

Reacting to the attacks on him and his government being described as “weak” by the BJP leaders, the prime minister asked voters to see for themselves what the BJP had done.

“The attack on parliament, the Kandahar hijack episode, the Akshardham attack, the Jammu and Kashmir assembly attack and the Kargil infiltration took place during the BJP regime in Delhi. The BJP government then was sleeping,” Manmohan Singh said in a rally in favour of Congress candidate and billionaire industrialist Naveen Jindal in this Haryana town, 20 km from Kurukshetra, which is about 150 km from the national capital.

“It was our brave soldiers who drove the infiltrators out and countered terrorism. You have seen yourself how strong their (BJP) leaders have been,” he added.

Manmohan Singh said that the way in which the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack was handled by his government showed that India dealt with terrorism with a firm hand.

The prime minister expressed concern at the instability in India’s neighbourhood.

“Nepal, Sri Lanka and Pakistan are seeing less of peace and stability. This is of concern to us. Only the Congress can give a strong government to deal with this,” he added.
