Kolkata: West Bengal’s ruling Left Front Tuesday said it apprehended violence in Thursday’s fourth phase of polling in the state.
“I’ve got specific information that some untoward incidents might take place on that day,” Left Front chairman Biman Bose said at a press conference here.
He said the opposition parties, led by the Trinamool Congress, had urged voters to come out of their houses with items like utensils and sticks.
“The opposition parties, mainly the state’s principal opposition force Trinamool Congress, are giving objectionable and provocative statements in an effort to disturb the law and order situation before the election. Some of their leaders are also writing provocative articles in their party mouthpieces which could lead to political tension during the election.”
“I also urge my party supporters not to step into that trap and try to conduct the polls in a free and fair manner,” Bose said.
He said the Election Commission-appointed observers should look into the issue so that the electorate, especially in the parliamentary constituency in East Mindapore district, could vote freely on the poll day.
Asked whether the Left parties will support the Congress after the general election, Bose declined to comment.
“I would not comment anything on it hypothetically. The decision would be taken in our party after the election,” Bose maintained.
