Kolkata : With nine more people succumbing overnight, the toll in the hooch tragedy in West Bengal’s East Midnapore district rose to 20 Wednesday, police said.
Three people were still admitted to hospital in serious condition, an officer at the state police control room said here.
“We have confirmation that 20 persons have died so far, and three others are serious in hospital,” the officer told IANS.
The victims had consumed country made liquor near Ramtarak Market of Mecheda in the Matangini block of the district Monday.
The state government Tuesday set up a one man committee to investigate the incident.
The latest hooch tragedy has come four months after 27 people – mostly labourers at the Bibi Halt and Hooghly Basti areas of Khidirpore in the city – died after consuming spurious country liquor in early January.
