New Delhi: India initiated 42 investigations into anti-dumping activities in the second half of 2008, the highest among the total 120 such cases moved by the World Trade Organisation (WTO) members.
Data released here Thursday by WTO showed that the last half of 2008 saw 16.5 percent jump in anti-dumping cases to 120 from 103 in the like period of the previous year.
WTO defines dumping as a situation when a company exports a product at a price lower than the price it normally charges in its home market.
While Chinese companies remained the subject of majority of these investigations with 34 cases, India faced only four such cases. China was the subject of 40 such investigations in the second half of 2007.
Exports from the European Union were being investigated in 16 cases in the second half of 2008, while Taiwan, Thailand and the US faced six separate cases each.
Products in the base metals sector were involved in 43 investigations, when India reported 24 of these, the data said.
Investigations were initiated into 22 cases related to chemical products, 19 in the textile sector and 14 in the plastics and rubber sector.
The data showed that 81 final anti-dumping measures were applied by the WTO members during the period, and of these the US topped the list by imposing 21 such measures.
India sanctioned 13 anti-dumping measures.
Overall, there were 138 final anti-dumping measures in 2008, comparing to 107 in 2007.
