New Delhi : India entered the last lap of Election 2009 Thursday with polling ending for the fourth of the five-phase elections.
It was a largely peaceful election across eight states, except for West Bengal where three people were killed.
The exercise began at 7 a.m. and concluded at 5 p.m. in the 85 Lok Sabha constituencies where 1,315 candidates were in the fray, including External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee and Bharatiya Janata Party leader Jaswant Singh.
Only Rajasthan (25 seats), Delhi (seven) and Haryana (10) saw polling in entire states. In Bihar, the last three of its 40 parliamentary constituencies saw voting along with four in Punjab, 18 in Uttar Pradesh and 17 in West Bengal.
Only Srinagar went to the polls in Jammu and Kashmir amid a boycott call given by the two wings of the separatist Hurriyat Conference and guerrilla groups, including those based in Pakistan.
The fifth and final phase will be held on May 13, with counting for all the seats three days later on May 16.
