Chandigarh: India’s first Olympics gold medal winner Abhinav Bindra’s father A.S. Bindra was arrested by a Delhi Police team from his farmhouse near here Thursday evening for defrauding nationalised and private banks of millions of rupees.
Bindra senior was arrested by the Economic Offences Wing of the Delhi Police from his sprawling farmhouse in Punjab, 15 km from here.
Police officials in Mohali town, adjoining Chandigarh, told IANS that Bindra complained of chest pain immediately after he was arrested. He was taken to the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) in Sector 32 here where he was examined.
Bindra had taken loans worth around Rs 90 million from various banks a few years ago for setting up his Punjab Meats Ltd plant at Derabassi town near here in Punjab.
He allegedly failed to repay the loans and was booked in 2006 and 2007 at Delhi’s Connaught Place Police Station.
Bindra is likely to be taken to Delhi Saturday, a police officer said.
His son Abhinav Bindra had become India’s first Olympics gold medal winner August last year at the Beijing Olympics.
