Ijaz Ahmed vows to clear his name of fraud charges

By IANS,

Karachi : Former Pakistan batsman Ijaz Ahmed has vowed to clear his name of fraud charges — of allegedly giving a client bad cheques worth over ten million rupees.

Ijaz, who was arrested in March, was finally freed on bail by a Lahore court Tuesday.

“The last few months have been nightmarish,” Ijaz, who played 60 Tests and 250 one-day internationals from 1987 to 2001, and was a member of Pakistan’s World Cup winning team in 1992, told reporters at Lahore.

“We will now follow the case as I am in the right and will fight until my name is cleared.”

The 40-year-old Ijaz, was accused of giving false cheques worth Rs.10.05 million to a client.

Ijaz, who also works as a coach in the National Cricket Academy run by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), was admitted to a Lahore hospital following a bout of asthma and breathing problems soon after his arrest in March. His plea for bail on medical grounds was rejected last month.

“The PCB was supportive as they believed I am innocent. I am thankful to them for supporting me,” he said.
