Binayak Sen gets bail from Supreme Court

By TwoCircles.net Staff Correspondent,

New Delhi: Incarcerated civil rights activist Binayak Sen got bail today from the Supreme Court. Sen has been lodged in a Raipur jail for over two years for his alleged links with Maoists in Chhattisgarh.

He was granted bail by a vacation bench of Justice Markandey Katju and Justice Deepak Verma. Former law minister Shanti Bhushan, appearing for Sen, had pleaded to the court to accord an urgent hearing to Sen’s bail plea in view of his deteriorating health condition.

The Chhattisgarh government had booked People’s Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL) vice president Sen under the stringent anti-terror law, Unlawful Activities Prevention Act, for his alleged links with Maoists. He was arrested on May 14, 2007. His several bail pleas had been rejected by the local court, High Court and even Supreme Court.
