Srinagar, India : The Kashmir High Court Bar Association, a union of Kashmiri lawyers, held a march in city centre against the spate of recent killings, but was prevented by the police to head for the UN office in Sonwar.
Kashmiri lawyers took out a procession from the lower courts and wound their way through the city center chanting slogans demanding freedom and the right of self-determination.
Holding banners and placards decrying murder, genocide and human rights violations, and demanding punishment to killers, the lawyers headed for the UN Observers’ office in Sonawar area of the capital, where they were to submit two memoranda, but were blocked by the police few hundred meters ahead.
Shouting slogans against the police, the marching lawyers overcame the resistance and pressed ahead but they ran into police barricades once again.
Addressing the marchers, the bar president, Mian Abdul Qayom, said that India would have to give up its obduracy for a resolution of the Kashmir issue, and the state government too would have to stop the killing of innocent people.
Declaring the right of self-determination as the only solution to the Kashmir issue, the Bar president asked the international community to mobilize itself and exert pressure on India to grant Kashmiris their rights.
