Mexican plane crash blamed on human error

By EFE,

Mexico City : A plane crash that killed Mexico’s interior secretary and 15 others a year ago was caused by human error, investigators said in their final report.

The government Learjet 45, which was carrying then interior secretary Juan Camilo Mourino, 37, and eight others, was flying Nov 4, 2008 from the central state of San Luis Potosi to Mexico City.

It crashed into rush hour traffic in an upscale neighborhood while making its descent for landing, killing all nine people on board and seven more people on the ground.

Lead investigator Gilberto Lopez Meyer said in presenting the report Tuesday that the plane went down due to turbulence from a Boeing 767 and that the pilots of the government jet came up behind the larger plane too quickly, despite orders from an air-traffic controller to reduce their speed.

The report also noted that the pilots had received insufficient training in the handling of a Learjet 45 and that the air-traffic controller had worked too much overtime in the days leading up to the accident.
