Northeast students delegation to meet PM on rising crime

By IANS,

New Delhi : A delegation of students and Congress workers from the northeast will meet Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Tuesday over the rise in crime against people from the region in the national capital.

“We are meeting the prime minister at his residence at 9 a.m. Tuesday. As he has been elected from Assam (to the Rajya Sabha), we want to apprise him about the problems the northeast students face in the Indian capital,” Sharif Laskar, general secretary of the Northeast Congress Committee, told IANS.

Laskar, who was one of the leaders who led the protest at the Jantar Mantar last week on the rising crime against the students from the northeast, hoped that the prime minister would be able to offer them solutions.

“We want him to intervene in the matter as it is a very serious issue. Every day we hear that students from the northeast are being assaulted or harassed,” he added.

“As the prime minister is from Assam, he would understand the problems the students are facing,” Laskar said.

He said that they have recently met Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi and Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on the issue.

On Oct 25, a 19 year-old Naga girl, Ramchonphy Hongrey was strangled and burned by a PhD scholar from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) as she spurned his advances.

In April, a six year old Naga girl was raped, murdered and dumped in a water tank on the rooftop in the Vasant Vihar area.

Several incidents were also reported from Gurgaon recently.
