Chandigarh: Keeping in view the rising need of renewable energy, the Haryana government Thursday made it mandatory for all buildings coming up after April next year to be compliant with the green rating norms of GRIHA.
GRIHA, or the Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment (GRIHA), is the national rating system for the green buildings in the country.
Haryana’s Principal Secretary of Renewable Energy Manik Sonawane said Thursday here that the new buildings should also have Energy Conservation Building Code (ECBC), another tool to assess the energy efficiency of buildings.
“Haryana is witnessing phenomenal growth in urban areas, especially in the national capital region (NCR). It had been felt that there was a lack of information both in government as well as non-government sectors about the rating system and the code,” Sonawane said.
While GRIHA aims at achieving efficient resource utilisation and enhanced resource efficiency in buildings, ECBC has been evolved to promote energy efficiency in the building sector.
“In order to meet the rising demand, fossil fuels are overexploited in an unsustainable manner, causing serious environmental problems. Clean technologies have emerged as the viable option to achieve sustainable development,” Sonawane added.
