Punjab to develop Amritsar as tourism hub

Chandigarh: The Punjab government Saturday announced plans to strengthen the infrastructure and promote the city of Amritsar as a tourist destination.

State Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal and Tourism Minister Hira Singh Gabria Saturday approved an integrated multi-million plan to put Amritsar on the tourist map.

“The ambitious plan approved today (Saturday) would involve strengthening the infrastructure of Amritsar city to make it a tourist friendly city,” said the state spokesperson here Saturday.

He added: “The plan involves construction of a heritage village, beautification of Ram Bagh gardens, preservation of historic Town Hall building, Gobindgarh Fort, historic gates, setting up of food street and development of pedestrian plaza opposite the Golden Temple.”

Amritsar is around 250 km from Chandigarh.
