Quetta : Five-kg bomb was planted in a bike parked on Spinny Road which exploded here on Tuesday morning, injuring Deputy Inspector General (Operations) Quetta Shahid Nizam Durrani, his driver, seven other people while one injured who was a passerby succumbed to his injuries at hospital.
Police sources told APP that unidentified men parked a five-kg bomb attached motorcycle at a breaker of Spinny Road which is close to office of DIG (Operations) Quetta.
The remote control bomb went off soon after official vehicle carrying Durrani after crossing Benazir Bridge reached the breaker and a passenger wagon coming from Pashin also reached the spot.
The police sources maintained that quantity of explosive was enough to devastate the DIG’s vehicle; however, fortunately, it has crossed the bike when remote control bomb exploded.
The DIG Operations sustained injuries in his hand while his driver Sardar suffered serious injuries and he was shifted to CMH Quetta.
Seven other people including six passersby and cleaner of the wagon Naimatullah also sustained injuries.
One of the injured succumbed to his injuries at hospital. He was identified as Haji Muhammad. Other wounded passersby were identified as Hyatullah, Faiz Muhammad, Iqbal Masih, Abdus Sattar Shah, and Khalid Iqbal.
Later, talking to APP, injured cleaner Naimatullah said that blast occurred soon after their wagon reached the spot, injuring him. He maintained that blast caused hue and cry on the scene and no body immediately understood what happened. He had been shifted to Civil Hospital for medical treatment.
Meanwhile, police sources told APP that search operation was launched in the affected area soon after blast, in which over 20 suspected persons had been apprehended who were being interrogated.
The continuous serial of target killings, bomb blast, ambush and hand grenade attacks on law enforcement agencies vehicles have created a panic and harassment in the provincial capital, badly damaging business activities.
It is worth mentioning that recently, Durrani has told media that Quetta police have ascertained whereabouts of killers of provincial education minister Shafique Ahmed Khan and they would be apprehended soon.
Durrani also had played a significant role in arrest of few separatist groups. CCPO Quetta Abid Nutkani and DIG Operations Quetta Shahid Nizam Durrani are famous for having a strict attitude towards separatist groups and both have played vital role in operations against them.
It is said that after assuming charge by Syed Javed Shah Bukhari as Inspector General Police Balochistan, campaign to arrest the separatists had gotten acceleration.
Provincial Police Headquarters told APP that Federal Interior Minister Rehman Malik has strongly condemned the bomb attack and directed provincial police officials to submit repot to him in this regard.
