London : The Indian Navy, along with the other major navies of the world, has been presented a special UN certificate for its anti-piracy activity in the dangerous Gulf of Aden off the coast of Somalia.
The certificate, presented at a ceremony at the UN International Maritime Organization (IMO) in London, was accepted by Commodore Pradyut Banerjee, the captain of one of 12 Indian warships deployed in the Gulf of Aden this year.
Banerjee received the certificate on behalf of the Indian Navy from IMO Secretary-General E.E. Mitropulous.
Indian naval ships have escorted about 700 merchant ships, including about 600 foreign-flagged vessels from over 45 countries, through the Gulf of Aden since October 2008.
The IMO recognized the stellar role played by the navies of the world in the Gulf of Aden in fighting piracy and the exceptional services rendered to shipping and humanity.
Indian High Commissioner Nalin Surie, the German Ambassador to the UK and IMO Assembly President Georg Boomgaarden were among those present at the ceremony Monday.
