Security apparatus geared to ward off terror: Ashok Chavan

By IANS,

Mumbai: The state’s security apparatus was fully prepared and geared to tackle any kind of terror attacks in the future, Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan said here Thursday on the first anniversary of the 26/11 terror strikes.

Speaking at a special memorial function organised this (Thursday) morning by the Indian Merchants Chamber (IMC) Memorial for the victims of the 26/11 terror attack and the July 11, 2006 serial train bombing near Churchgate, Chavan said a flag march was taken out in the morning from Hotel Oberoi Trident to Chowpatty to instil public confidence.

“In this, the newly-created Force One, created on the lines of the elite National Security Guard (NSG) also took part. The security forces also displayed its array of sophisticated weapons, bulletproof vehicles, amphibian boats, and other things,” Chavan said.

“We shall fight back the forces of terror with our police force who are trained in new ways of handling terrorism,” he promised.

Terming last year’s 26/11 attacks in which 166 innocent lives were lost as “unfortunate”, Chavan said the entire country was paying tribute to the brave police personnel who sacrificed their lives in order to save the lives of the people of this city.

IMC President Gul Kripalani said a proposal had been approved to install 5,000 closed circuit television cameras in the city to prevent terror attacks.

“These would come up at strategic locations all over the city for stepping up vigil against terror activities and monitor the movements of anti-social elements,” he said.

Amongst those present on the occasion were prominent dignitaries, several corporate bigwigs as well as members of the diplomatic corps.
