Central team’s visit to West Bengal was not required: Karat

By IANS,

Kolkata : Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) general secretary Prakash Karat Monday said there was no need to send the central home ministry team to West Bengal to review the law and order situation there.

“As far as we’re concerned, we think such a visit was not required. There was no need to send the central team to the state,” Karat told reporters here.

He said the visit was politically motivated and the central government had to send the team acting under pressure of its ally Trinamool Congress.

The CPI-M general secretary said: “As the law and order is the state’s subject, the centre’s unilateral decision to send such a team to the state is unconstitutional.”

“The team will only meet the state government officials and will asses the situation,” Karat added.

Karat arrived in Kolkata Saturday morning to attend a two-day CPI-M state committee meeting that ended here Monday.
