Geneva : UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon Monday condemned the “terrorist attack” on the office of the World Food Programme (WFP) in Pakistan that killed four of the agency’s employees.
“I condemn in the strongest terms the attack at the office of WFP in Islamabad, Pakistan,” Ban said in Geneva.
The UN has named the victims of Monday’s suicide bombing at the WFP compound in the capital Islamabad as Iraqi Botan Ahmed Ali and three Pakistani nationals Abid Rehman, Gulrukh Tahir and Farzana Barkat.
“Such an attack is unjustifiable. It is a terrible tragedy for the UN and the whole humanitarian community in Pakistan. This is a heinous crime committed against those who have been working trying to assist the poor and vulnerable on the frontlines of hunger,” Ban told reporters.
Ban also offered his condolences to the families of the victims.
The UN closed its offices in Pakistan following the attack. Ban however noted, “We will continue with humanitarian assistance to the Pakistani people.”
More than two million displaced people are in need of urgent assistance in Pakistan, according to the UN chief.
