Sonia Gandhi surveys flood-hit Andhra from air

By IANS,

Hyderabad : United Progressive Alliance (UPA) chairperson Sonia Gandhi Monday conducted an aerial survey of Andhra Pradesh’s flood-hit districts.

Accompanied by union Home Minister P. Chidambaram and Chief Minister K. Rosaiah, she flew over the worst affected districts of Mahbubnagar and Kurnool to assess the damage caused by the inundation.

The Congress president had landed at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport here in the morning and immediately left for the flood-hit areas. The party’s central leadership had directed state ministers, legislators and MPs not to come to the airport to welcome her.

Congress general secretary and Andhra Pradesh in-charge M. Veerappa Moily and state Congress president D. Srinivas also accompanied Sonia Gandhi.

The worst floods in the Krishna river in 100 years have caused widespread devastation in five districts of the state, killing 37 people, rendering over 400,000 homeless and damaging crops over thousands of acres.
