New Delhi: Azamgarh-based Association for Welfare, Medical, Educational and Legal Assistance (AWMELA) has demanded stringent action against the Jaipur Central Jail authorities for carrying out torture on Muslim inmates on the day of Eid and stopping them from offering the annual special prayers.

In a memorandum to the President of India, AWMELA urged the head of the nation to intervene in the matter to stop the continued inhuman behavior and torture of Muslim inmates – mostly those accused in terror cases. Many of Azamgarh youths accused of terror blasts in the country including Jaipur serial blasts have been kept in Jaipur jail.

“Inhuman and barbaric treatment meted out to Central Jail inmates, Jaipur must stop forthwith,” demanded Dr Javed Akhtar, President, AWMELA. The organization held a special meeting in Azamgarh on October 9 and approved the memorandum to be sent to the President of India.

“As atrocities committed on Eid day has been reported through FIR and an enquiry has been set up to bring the culprits to book, torturing of Jail inmates by way of total confinement in a dingy cell amounts to revengeful act on part of Central Jail, Jaipur authorities and needs cognizance,” the memo reads.

AWMELA also demanded contempt of court proceeding against the guilty officials for violating the Bombay High Court order regarding jail-inmates relation.

“Continued atrocities committed by Central Jail, Jaipur authorities, who in the light of Mumbai High Court judgment are not only Custodian but Protector, Reformer and Consellor of their Charge, is not only a disrespect of Court judgment but warrants contempt of Court proceedings against those who have committed/committing this heinous crime.”
