New York : The UN Security Council Tuesday gave its peacekeeping mission in Haiti a one-year mandate extension so it can complete the work of training the Haitian national police in addition to assisting the government in stabilising the security.
The mission is composed of more than 7,000 military and civilian personnel and an international police force of over 2,000 involved in training the Haitian police. The mission will remain in Haiti until Oct 15, 2010, with the possibility of another renewal of its mandate.
The mission, known under his acronym MINUSTAH, has been tasked also to support the political process of an all-inclusive political dialogue and national reconciliation and the organisation of general elections in Haiti in 2010.
The peacekeeping mission suffered a major loss when a military surveillance plane crashed Friday near the border with the Dominican Republic, killing all 11 personnel onboard. The dead included the crew and nationals from Uruguay and Jordan.
