New Delhi : With India accounting for 10 percent of the global road accident deaths annually, experts from across the world will meet in the national capital to discuss means to reduce fatalities on the road.

About 300 road safety experts will participate in a two-day meet on Accident Prevention and Road Safety Measures organised by the Geneva based International Road Federation (IRF) from Oct 23.

“The experts will discuss ways and means to reduce fatal road accidents. Worldwide, governments are working on reducing fatal accidents and European countries have been successful. But in the developing countries, including India, road accident fatalities are on the rise,” said K.K. Kapila, vice chairman with IRF.

The experts will discuss subjects related to vehicle design, road safety through engineering measures, advanced traffic management systems, public education, intelligent highways and vehicle safety devices.

According to Kapila, a session will be especially dedicated for road safety in metro cities.

The ministry of road transport and highways, and IRF have also launched a joint initiative in the country to reduce fatal accidents by 50 percent by 2012.
