Pro-talk Bodo leader shot in Assam

By IANS,

Guwahati : A senior tribal separatist leader was shot by unidentified gunmen in Assam Wednesday, officials said.

S. Sangjarang, publicity chief of the pro-talk faction of the outlawed National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB), was attacked by two motorcycle borne gunmen at a crowded marketplace in Udalguri town, about 90 north of Assam’s main city of Guwahati.

“Sangjarang was coming in a motorbike when two gunmen, also on a motorcycle, fired at him from close range with small arms,” a senior police official said.

The NDFB leader was hit on his arms and legs; doctors said his condition was stable.

The NDFB faction led by Gobinda Basumatary, to which Sangjarang belongs, has been in ceasefire mode with New Delhi since 2005.

Another NDFB faction headed by guerrilla leader Ranjan Daimary is still underground.

“Preliminary investigations indicate that the attack on Sangjarang was carried out by the rival NDFB group led by Ranjan Daimary,” the official said.

The NDFB had split in January this year.
