14 cops injured in stone-pelting in Bhopal

By IANS,

Bhopal : Fourteen policemen escorting the anti-encroachment squad of the Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) were injured Sunday as a mob opposing the drive pelted stones at the team, police said.

The trouble started when the squad removed an illegally constructed temple before dawn in Char Imli area where a majority of the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) and other senior government officials live.

As soon as the news spread in the area, some residents, including the nearby slum dwellers, gathered and taking advantage of the pre-dawn darkness, pelted stones in which 14 cops were injured, Additional Superintendent of Police (New City) Ruchi Srivastava told IANS.

“Heavy police force has been deployed in the area falling under Habibganj police station and the situation is now under control,” the police official said.

Habibganj police station’s officer-in-charge S.K.Damle said that 15 people have been arrested on suspicion of involvement in the stone-pelting.
