Srinagar: The Separatists group sponsored general strike to protest against landing of Indian troops in Jammu and Kashmir on this day crippled life in the Valley.

All the business establishments including, educational institutions, banks, courts, and other semi-government institutions remained closed and traffic remained off the roads in the Valley in response to the call given by both factions of Hurriyat Conference.

The strike was also supported among others by Kashmir’s High Court Bar Association, which has mostly affected the students of the valley who were going through their final exams.

The complete shutdown was observed on this day in 1947 when the Indian troops had landed in the state to repulse Pakistani-backed tribal attackers who had reached Srinagar airport.

The deployment of police and paramilitary forces has been increased in all areas to restrict the mobs and to maintain law and order situation in the city.

The strike was equally observed in other district headquarters of the valley including in Kupwara, Baramulla, Bandipora, Budgam, Ganderbal, Pulwama, Anantnag, Shopian and Kulgam.

The two day strike call from the separatist group is expected to paralyze the valley tomorrow ahead the visit of Prime Minister Dr. Mahanmohan Singh who is scheduled to arrive here for the inauguration of Anantnang-Qazigund railway line.
