Mangal Singh goes down in World Archery quarterfinals

Kolkata : India’s disappointing show continued in the 45th World Archery Championship as Mangal Singh Champia’s hopes for a medal ended in the quarterfinals at Ulsan, South Korea, Sunday.

Champia’s campaign in men’s individual recurve came to an end when he fell to second seed Lee Chang-Hwan of Korea, 111-114 at the Ulsan International Archery Field.

None of the other Indians in the men’s and women’s individual section of the recurve category managed to move past the third round, according to information received here.

Rahul Banerjee came a cropper against top seed Oh Jin Hyek of Korea, scoring 109-112 in the third round. Jayanta Talukdar went out in the second round to Yavor Vasilov Hristov of Bulgaria, 108-111 in men’s competition.

In the women’s section, veteran Dola Banerjee lost to Amercian Khatuna Lorig 99-105 and Rimil Buriuly fell to Miki Kanie of Japan 105-108, both in the second round. Pratima Boro and Anneli Preimann of Estonia were tied 104-104 at the end of the 12-arrow contest, but in the one-arrow shoot-off, Anneli won 9-8.

The men’s recurve team is the last medal hope for India Monday.
