Lucknow : Panic prevailed in the Ghazipur district jail of Uttar Pradesh Tuesday morning after over a dozen jail inmates clashed with policemen posted there, officials said.
Though no one was seriously injured, nearly a dozen inmates, policemen and the jailor received minor injuries.
Senior officials reached the spot — around 350 km from state capital Lucknow — and pacified the inmates who were alleging that the policemen were extorting money from them.
“The inmates have alleged that the cops, while taking them to court, demand money in lieu of allowing them to have food in hotels or to meet and talk to their relatives. The allegations will be probed and strict action will be taken against those found guilty,” Ghazipur District Magistrate Anil Kumar told IANS.
“The jailor has filed a complaint and we are in the process of registering an FIR (First Information Report),” Superintendent of Police L. Ravi Kumar told IANS.
Mafia don turned politician Mukhtar Ansari is among the inmates of the jail. He is under trial for the murder of Bharatiya Janata Party legislator Krishnanand Rai.
