Delhi waterlogged – again

By IANS,

New Delhi : Another spell of rain, another day of traffic jams. It was a familiar story for residents in the capital and its suburbs Thursday with heavy rains leading to waterlogged roads, traffic lights that didn’t work and endless snarls that snagged children going to schools and people trying to get to office.

With overnight rains that continued relentlessly in the morning, the city came to a virtual standstill. Key roads like the Ring Road, the Dhaula Kuan intersection and the Delhi-Noida-Delhi expressway saw mile long queues of vehicles trying to get to their destinations.

Many children reached school late, and several office-goers decided to work from home to avoid being stuck on the roads. Some left home but turned back halfway, and those who left early to try and avoid the inevitable jams found it was a futile exercise.

“The expressway only got me to the jam faster,” complained a young executive who left his home in Gurgaon at 8 a.m. for his office in central Delhi only to get stuck at Dhaula Kuan. More than two hours after he left home, he still hadn’t reached office.

As TV channels and radio stations put out updates on the traffic situation, many Delhiites only wondered if their city deserved the rains at all.
