Jammu and Kashmir governor visits forward areas in Ladakh

By IANS,

Srinagar : Jammu and Kashmir Governor N.N. Vohra, at present on a five-day visit to the Ladakh region, Monday visited some forward army positions in the region.

Though Vohra’s visit has been described as a scheduled visit, it comes in the wake of media reports about Chinese incursions into the Indian side of the border in Ladakh and denial of such reports by the foreign offices of the two countries.

Vohra, accompanied by Lt. General P.C. Bhardwaj, the general-officer-commanding of the Indian Army’s Northern Command, and Lt. General S.K. Singh, commander of 14th corps in the Ladakh region, visited the Siachin glacier, carried out an aerial reconnaissance of the world’s highest altitude battlefield and also interacted with the troops guarding the country’s border in the most inhospitable weather conditions.

Vohra has also visited the Pangong Lake in Nyoma sub-division of Leh district. Pangong Lake is one of the largest sweet water lakes in the country, and the other end of the lake is held by the Chinese army which occupied the region’s Aksai Chin area during the 1962 war.

Media reports last week said that the some Chinese troops had come to the Indian side of the lake and threatened shepherds there.

An official press release here said the governor addressed the troops in the forward area of Ladakh region and had tea with them.
