Chennai, India : Nalini Sriharan, convicted of the murder of Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, ended her three-day fast-unto-death at Vellore Central prison on Wednesday.

Nalini, 43, a former member of Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), started her fast on Monday, along with 12 jailed LTTE members. They have been demanding for early release.

“She ended her fast at 7am after the prison official gave an assurance they would look into her demand. She is quite weak and is being treated at the prison’s clinic,” Nalini’s lawyer, P. Pugalenthi, told Bernama.

In 1997 a special court here sentenced Nalini to death for her role in the killing of Gandhi, but later reduced it to life term.

She had spent nearly 18 years in jail, where she gave birth to a girl, who is now 19 years old and lives in London.

Nalini has also completed her Master’s programme in Computer Application at the Indira Gandhi National Open University this month.

Nalini’s husband, former Tamil Tiger member, Sriharan alias Murugan, is also serving his sentence at Vellore prison.
