Brussels : The European Union strongly condemned here Tuesday the violent crackdown by security forces on political demonstrations in Conakry , Guinea, on Monday in which over 80 people were killed.
“The indiscriminate and brutal violence against these demonstrators is unacceptable,” said the Swedish EU Presidency in a statement. The 27-member European bloc called for the release of the arrested demonstrators and members of the opposition and urged the authorities in Guinea to immediately conduct a thorough investigation of the incidents.
In a separate statement, EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana also strongly condemned “the use of force to disperse the demonstrations in Conakry.
He urged for the immediate release of the arrested political leaders and called on the authorities to exercise maximum restraint and ensure a peaceful and democratic transition.
