Minor argument leads to murder, rioting in Chandigarh

By IANS,

Chandigarh: An argument over a petty issue led to the murder of a youth followed by incidents of violence in a suburban area of the city Tuesday, police said.

According to the police, Tej Bahadur, who worked in a milk dairy in Indira Colony in Manimajra suburb, was stabbed by Babloo, a resident of the same area, after an argument late Monday night. He was admitted at the government hospital in Sector 16, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Tej Bahadur’s murder infuriated some people in the colony, who went on a rampage in the area, damaging at least eight vehicles, blocking road traffic and pelting stones at the houses of Bablo’s community in the colony.

However, police said they had brought the situation in the area under control.

“We had mobilised enough police force to control the situation. For few hours, we had restricted the movement of people in the area and deployed our force including commandos in the area,” Chandigarh’s Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) S.S. Srivastava told IANS.

“We have talked to the senior members of both community and they are ready to sit and talk. Some mischievous elements are trying to give this incident a communal colour,” he said.

Meanwhile, Babloo has been arrested. Srivastava said he bears a criminal background and some cases are pending against him.
