Meerut: A gangster, carrying a bounty of Rs.60,000 on his head and wanted in nearly 20 criminal cases, was shot dead here Monday by the Uttar Pradesh police, an official said.
Sonu, 25, who had several cases of murder, extortion and kidnapping against him at various police stations of several districts, was shot dead in a gunfight under the Lisarigate police station here, police spokesman Nagesh Kumar told reporters.
“While the police team shot dead Sonu during the gunfight, one of his aides managed to escape even after receiving bullet injuries,” he added.
According to police, Sonu mainly used to operate in eastern districts of Uttar Pradesh but had links with criminals of others states including Bihar and Madhya Pradesh.
A 9 mm pistol and several live cartridges were recovered from the spot.
