New Delhi : Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar has approved independent MP Kirodilal Meena’s request to allow him to come to the high security parliament house complex on bicycle, said Lok Sabha Secretary General P.D.T. Achary here Tuesday.
Meena, who represents Dausa constituency, had written a letter to the speaker after a group of MPs approached her last month over the eco-friendly ride to parliament. Welcoming the idea, the speaker said she has asked the Lok Sabha secretariat to make arrangements.
“The MP could come to parliament by the self-driven vehicle. We have already identified a space which could be used as bicycle stand,” Achary told IANS.
The MPs who wanted to pedal down to the parliament complex include Rajiv Pratap Rudy of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Bharthruhari Mahtab of Biju Janata Dal (BJD) and Sandeep Dikshit of the Congress.
But only Meena had given a written request to the speaker. “A reply has been sent to Meena,” Achary said.
When contacted, Meena, who was touring in his constituency, said over phone that he had written a letter to the speaker seeking permission to come to parliament on a bicycle.
It remains to be seen what kind of security card is given to an MP’s bicycle by the security establishment of parliament, sources said.
Security at the parliament complex was tightened following a terror attack in 2001. A visitor needs to pass through multiple layers of security.
“Radio Frequency Tags” along with a sticker have been provided to establish the identity of MPs, their cars and their drivers at the entrance.
