Russia starts government email service

By IANS/RIA Novosti,

Moscow : People in Russia will no longer have to wait in long queues to apply for official documents with the government approving the creation of a state email service, a report said Friday.

The state email service will allow citizens to communicate with officials and be rendered public services via the Internet by the end of 2010, the report said.

The initiative is part of efforts by the government to reduce the level of corruption and red tape in the country. The service will provide Russians an opportunity to apply for various documents and receive them by e-mail without having to stand in long queues.

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev had approved the creation a state email service last year.

The service will be operated by a subsidiary of state-run telecommunication giant Svyazinvest.
