Sreedharan undergoes bypass surgery after heart attack

New Delhi: Delhi Metro Managing Director E. Sreedharan Thursday underwent cardiac bypass surgery after suffering a heart attack a day earlier, his doctor said.

Sreedharan underwent surgery at the Apollo Hospital here.

“Sreedharan underwent a cardiac bypass surgery today (Thursday) and is recovering in the Intensive Care Unit. Presently his condition is stable. A multidisciplinary team of doctors is monitoring his progress,” a statement issued by the Apollo Hospital said.

Sreedharan was Wednesday scheduled to board a flight for Kolkata but he developed uneasiness in the chest and was rushed to hospital.

“He is fine. He is recovering but will not be discharged now because we will need to review his condition for a week after the bypass,” senior cardiologist S.K Gupta told IANS.

Delhi Metro director (electrical) Satish Kumar will look after Sreedharan’s routine duties till Sreedharan rejoins, a Delhi Metro spokesperson told IANS.

Sreedharan revolutionised the national capital’s transport with the rapidly expanding network of the Metro, work on which started in 2002. He is also lauded for his stint as head of the Konkan Railways under the railways ministry.
