Chandigarh : Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal Friday asked deputy commissioners of all districts to personally oversee wheat procurement in the state.
Badal reviewed wheat procurement arrangements across the state at a meeting with senior officials here. He asked the deputy commissioners to coordinate with officials of the food and civil supplies department and heads of procurement agencies.
“We have to ensure that every grain of the farmers is lifted,” Badal said.
Over 100,000 tonnes of wheat have arrived in grain markets across Punjab so far.
Badal asked his principal secretary D.S. Guru to monitor the procurement operation on a day-to-day basis.
Wheat arrival is expected to pick up in Punjab after the harvest festival of ‘Baisakhi’ (April 13-14). The state is expecting a bumper crop this year.
Punjab alone contributes over 50 per cent of the foodgrain to the national kitty.
