India takes up chairmanship of ITU council

New Delhi: India will chair the governing body of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) this year, an official statement said here Wednesday.

“India becomes the new chairman of International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Council 2010. R.N. Jha, Deputy Director General, Department of Telecommunication, took over the rotating chairmanship from Ghana in a meeting recently at Geneva,” the statement said.

The council, ITU’s governing body, comprises 46 member states.

The ITU will hold its plenipotentiary conference in Mexico Oct 4-22 in which members will decide the future role of the organisation and its ability to influence the development of information and communication technologies (ITC) worldwide.
