Lucknow : A local leader of the ruling Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) was shot dead by unidentified assailants in Uttar Pradesh’s Ambedkar Nagar district, police said Wednesday.
Subhash Singh, also the former block head of Bheeti in Ambedkar Nagar, was killed Tuesday night in Mehrua area, about 200 km from here.
“According to eyewitnesses, three assailants fired several rounds at Subhash Singh while he was returning home on a motorcycle,” police inspector Manoj Kumar told reporters in Ambedkar Nagar.
“After attacking the BSP leader, the three assailants escaped while firing in the air. The three were seen moving towards Dostpur area of the district,” he added.
Singh received several bullet injuries and died while being taken to a hospital.
“We are yet to ascertain the motive behind the crime. However, the leader’s family allege the death could be a fallout of some political rivalry,” said Kumar.
“Teams have been constituted to nab the assailants,” he added.
