Date for West Bengal census extended

By IANS,

Kolkata : The central government has extended by a month till September the date for completing the census in West Bengal, a senior official said Thursday.

Home Secretary Samar Ghosh said: “The central government has informed us that the date has been extended by a month. Earlier the state was asked to complete the census by August.”

“The census at several places in Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) area could not be completed because of the (May 31) civic poll. There was also a shortage of manpower for conducting the survey in the KMC area.”

Ghosh, who held a meeting with the district magistrate of South 24 Parganas and the city municipal commissioner, said the manpower problem has been sorted out.

“The district magistrate has roped in several youth and the survey will be completed within the extended time.”

Ghosh also said that the census in Junglemahal (Maoist-affected forested areas of West Midnapore, Bankura and Purulia) could not be completed by August because of the on-going trouble. It will be completed in the next phase, he added.
