Berlin : Polish police on Wednesday detained a grenade-wielding man near the presidential palace, according to local news reports.
The 60-year-old suspect, identified as Andrzej K., was allegedly threatening people near the palace who were defending a cross installed there to commemorate President Lech Kaczynski, who was killed with 95 others in a plane crash in Russia in April.
It turned out the man was only carrying the shell of a Russian-made F-1 hand grenade.
The suspect faces up to 10 years in prison, if found guilty.
The latest incident comes in the wake of rising public tensions over whether the cross should remain at the palace or be located to a nearby church.
Warsaw city officials told the Polish broadcasting network TVN 24 that if the situation remains tense at the presidential palace because of the cross, they may beef up security or cordon off the street to traffic.
Meanwhile, police detained another man Tuesday after he allegedly hurled a jar of feces at a plaque commemorating the plane crash victims.
