Sydney : The first time Australia’s Wyatt Roy was mature enough to vote in a parliamentary election, the 20-year-old had his name on the ballot paper.
He won and is now the Liberal National Party member of parliament for the seat of Longman, a 1,239-square-km spread in Queensland.
“I don’t think I was ever perceived as the likeliest candidate,” Roy admitted.
It is just his first success at elected office. In high school – which was only three years ago – the impossibly youthful looking Roy failed in his three attempts to be voted a prefect.
Now, he is the youngest-ever member of the Canberra parliament.
Warren Truss, the leader of the party, is a mentor and friend.
“I think Wyatt Roy is an exciting prospect for the future,” Truss said. “He’s a very bright young man who has enormous potential … maybe one day he would be prime minister at a very early age.”
