New Delhi : The national capital can’t afford to host any more mega sporting events, as already preparations for the October Commonwealth Games have caused enough damage to the city, Rajya Sabha MP Mani Shankar Aiyar said Wednesday.
Speaking to a group of Delhi University students and media on the sidelines of a conference, Aiyar said that there is a “danger” of Asian Games 2019 and Olympics being organised in the city.
“Why such mega events should be held only in Delhi, why can’t other tiny states like Manipur be given a chance,” he questioned.
He said small states like Manipur which bagged the highest number of medals in the national games should be encouraged.
“If a bulk of the Rs.35,000 crore, the estimated cost of the Games, is spent in Manipur and if the Commonwealth Games were conducted there, the insurgents would have got a very good answer,” he added.
Answering questions about the Games preparations, he said: “Just 37 days to go for the event and the government has ensured a spectacular Games. Let us see how the government fills the gaps.”
