Tamil Nadu Wakf Board to set up a medical college & hospital

Chennai: The Tamil Nadu Wakf Board is planning to set up a medical college cum hospital of 300 beds in collaboration with a madrasa in Mayiladuthurai. The college, which is estimated to cost around Rs 60 crores for first two years, is likely to become operative in 2012.

“A medical college is proposed to be set up by Tamil Nadu Wakf Board at Needur, near Mayiladuthurai. The college will be operative in 2012” said S. Abdul Rahman, chairman of Tamil Nadu Wakf Board.

He further said that he would initially avail 23 acres of land as donation from Jamia Misbahul Huda Madarasa, as joint venture, and 30 acres of land is likely to be added further. The estimated expenditure for two years will be around Rs.60 crores”, said Mr. Rahman.

It is said the hospital will have 300 beds.

“Since the medical college is not profit motivated, we will seek concession from the government” says the chairman of the Wakf Board.

He further said: “The Wakf Board has organized few meetings and will hold more to explain the plan, and to enlist more members. At the first meeting at Needur, 170 members have agreed to become members. We hope to get more members. The membership fee stipulated is Rs.10 lakh.”

When asked if the members will enjoy free seats as quota in the medical college, Mr. Rahman said,” blood relatives of the members are eligible for a seat, as one seat for a person in the member’s life time. The members will get free treatment at the hospital attached to the medical college”

“There will be no capitation fees collected. The fees prescribed by the state government will apply to medical college” says Mr.Rahman. He further disclosed that Wakf Board has various plans to start schools and colleges in different parts of the state, and one such plan is offing to start a law college at Arcot”says Rahman.

“An expert governing body will run the institution” says Mr, Rahman.
