Kolkata: A high alert was sounded in West Bengal following a blast in the Uttar Pradesh temple town of Varanasi Tuesday evening that killed a child and left many injured, police said.
“All the police stations across the state have been alerted. All police personnel have been told to be extra vigilant mainly in the national and international border areas,” said Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) Surajit Kar Purkayastha.
“Police personnel have also been asked to keep a close vigil in railways stations, airports and religious places,” Purkayastha told IANS over phone.
Security has been beefed up in Kolkata. The city’s entry and exist points have been kept under strict vigilance to prevent entry of outsiders.
“All 48 police stations in the city have been put on alert. Police personnel have been asked to carry out thorough checking at entry and exit points of the city to prevent easy entry of outsiders,” Kolkata Police’s Joint Commissioner (headquarters) Jawed Shamim told IANS.
