Coldest day in Srinagar at minus 3.8 degrees

Srinagar : The minimum temperature in Jammu and Kashmir’s summer capital Srinagar fell to minus 3.8 degrees Celsius Wednesday, making it the coldest day of the season so far.

In Leh town of Ladakh region, the minimum temperature was recorded at a bone chilling minus 15.6 degrees.

“Minimum temperature was minus 15.6 degrees Celsius in Leh and minus 7.4 degrees Celsius in Kargil,” said R.L. Pandita, assistant director of the local weather office here.

Pandita also said the mercury is likely to fall further.

“Due to clear night skies, the minimum temperatures are likely to fall further as we are expecting cold, dry weather to continue for another two to three days”, the official said.

Most of the smaller water bodies in the Valley had frozen Wednesday morning.

“We had to light a little fire under the water tap in the morning to de-freeze it. Small pools of water on the main road had also frozen, making it tougher for motorists to drive on the slippery surface,” said Mehraj-ud-din, 46, an engineer living in north Kashmir’s Ganderbal district.
