Cancun (Mexico) : Three people were found brutally murdered in this Mexican resort city, where a UN climate summit is going on amid heavy security.
In two separate incidents Wednesday that bore the hallmarks of organised crime, three men — aged 25-30 — were shot dead after being tortured, according to police reports.
The drug-related violence that has wracked Mexico’s border region has also spread to Greater Cancun, a year-round tourist destination where several drug cartels are battling for control of the illicit trade.
The Caribbean city is currently under heavy security, with federal police and soldiers deployed to ensure the safety of participants in the Nov 29-Dec 10 UN conference on climate change.
Nearly 30,000 people have died in drug-related violence since President Felipe Calderon militarised the struggle against Mexico’s cartels shortly after taking office in December 2006.
