Chennai : Tamil Maiyam, an NGO linked to DMK MP and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi’s daughter Kanimozhi, was set up in July 2002 to promote Tamil art, literature and culture.
According to the NGO’s website, it sought to focus on research, creative productions and publications. Tamil Maiyam is located in Chennai’s largely middle class area of Mylapore.
Its other listed aims include bringing “the fruits of modern science to the ordinary Tamils” and to create a platform for “Tamil people across the world to interact, relate, learn and work together for the betterment of Tamil as a language and the Tamil society”.
“Tamil Maiyam is also committed to bring urban facilities to rural areas,” the website says. Donations to it are exempt under Section 80G of the Income Tax Act.
Kanimozhi is one of 10 members on the NGO’s board, which is headed by Sri Lankan Tamil Jegath Gaspar Raj, who is widely known as a supporter of the now vanquished Tamil Tigers.
The website describes “Kanimozhi Karunanidhi” as poet, columnist and writer.
