Agartala : A 22-year-old woman gave birth to five babies in a government hospital in Tripura, but none survived, doctors said Thursday.
Patirung Reang, a tribal, gave birth to five girls in Chawmanu (northern Tripura) late Wednesday, medical officer of the government hospital Rabindra Das told reporters.
“All the kids died subsequently. The weights of the quintuplets were much below the normal weight of a new born baby, which should be between 2 to 4 kg. The babies weighed between 900 to 1200 grams,” said Das, who led a three-member team of doctors for the delivery.
The mother is doing well, he added.
Renowned gynaecologist and former director of Tripura’s health department Ela Lodh said: “Such deliveries occur due to multiple active cell divisions in the ovaries. This is possible and not extremely abnormal.”
