Sony India expects digital camera sales to grow 50 percent

Kolkata : Sony India expects its digital camera sales revenue to grow 50 percent from Rs.600 crore to Rs.900 crore by March 2011, a top company official said here Thursday.

“We had 35 percent share of the total camera market – comprising compact and interchangeable lens digital cameras – in March 2010. And with the launch of two more models, it is expected to grow to 40 percent by March next year,” Sony India senior general manager (Sales) Sunil Nayyar said.

“In alignment to this, Sony’s digital camera sales revenue is estimated to go up from Rs.600 crore to Rs.900 crore by end of the 2011 fiscal,” Nayyar said after launching the world’s smallest and lightest interchangeable Lens Digital Cameras – the NEX-5 and NEX-3.

He said the company plans to sell 40,00 units of the NEX series units by March 2011 and has invested Rs.25 crore towards marketing activities in this regard.

Nayyar said India’s total camera market, now pegged at Rs.1,750 crore, is expected to reach Rs.2,250 crore by March 2011.

“The total camera market, currently pegged at Rs.1,750 crore for FY10, is growing at 30 percent per annum, and is expected to reach Rs.2,250 Crore by FY11.
